Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Scroggins Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sharpstown International School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Scroggins Elementary School has a regular student population of 348 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Sharpstown International School has 1,304 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.1 students/teacher ratio.
Scroggins Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sharpstown International School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 89 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Scroggins Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Sharpstown International School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Scroggins Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 98.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (0.86%), Whites or Caucasians (0.57%) and Two or More Races (0.29%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Sharpstown International School, Hispanics make up 82.52% of student population, followed by Asians (8.51%), African Americans (6.44%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Native Americans (0.23%) and Two or More Races (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Scroggins Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.40% compared to 97.70% at Sharpstown International School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Scroggins Elementary School has 184 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 52.87% of student population. Sharpstown International School has significantly more ELLs at 359 or about 27.53% of student population.
In addition, Scroggins Elementary School has 52.59% bilingual students, 6.90% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.34% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sharpstown International School with 26.99% bilingual students, 24.77% gifted and talented students and 6.44% students in the special education program.

The 76 teachers at Sharpstown International School have been serving the school for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Scroggins Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Sharpstown International School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Scroggins Elementary School there are 21 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
