Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Scroggins Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Gross Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Scroggins Elementary School has a regular student population of 348 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Gross Elementary School has 502 students and a student-teacher ratio of 20.7 students/teacher ratio.
Scroggins Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Scroggins Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Gross Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Scroggins Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 98.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (0.86%), Whites or Caucasians (0.57%) and Two or More Races (0.29%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Gross Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.58% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.04%), Whites or Caucasians (1.59%), Asians (1.39%) and Two or More Races (1.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Scroggins Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 95.40% compared to 98.80% at Gross Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Scroggins Elementary School has 184 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 52.87% of student population. Gross Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 224 or about 44.62% of student population.
Scroggins Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 52.59%, gifted and talented students, 6.90%, while 10.34% are in the special education program. Gross Elementary School bilingual students comprise 44.22%, gifted and talented students, 3.19%, and 8.76% are in the special education program.
