Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Sam Tasby Middle School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Thomas J Rusk Middle School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sam Tasby Middle School’s regular student population is 771 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Thomas J Rusk Middle School is 514 students and a 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Sam Tasby Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Social Studies, Sam Tasby Middle School earned one out of seven distinctions. Thomas J Rusk Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Sam Tasby Middle School. They make up for 63.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.83%), Asians (9.73%), Whites or Caucasians (2.59%) and Two or More Races (1.30%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.

Based on household incomes, Sam Tasby Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 96.50% compared to 95.72% at Thomas J Rusk Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sam Tasby Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 72.24% of its student population compared to 53.50% at Thomas J Rusk Middle School.
In addition, Sam Tasby Middle School has 68.87% bilingual students, 10.77% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.27% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Thomas J Rusk Middle School with 48.83% bilingual students, 16.73% gifted and talented students and 14.79% students in the special education program.
