When we compared Sam Houston High School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Seguin High School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Sam Houston High School’s regular student population is 3,539 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Seguin High School is 1,572 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Sam Houston High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 63 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 39 in closing performance gaps. It scored 64 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Seguin High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Seguin High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and with 25% student progress. Sam Houston High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sam Houston High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 72.76% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.07%), Whites or Caucasians (3.67%), Asians (3.42%), Two or More Races (0.71%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
The student population at Seguin High School is also predominantly by African Americans at 38.42%, followed by Hispanics (31.93%), Asians (14.50%), Whites or Caucasians (11.96%), Two or More Races (2.67%) and Native Americans (0.45%).
Based on household incomes, Sam Houston High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 89.18% compared to 64.89% at Seguin High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sam Houston High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 43.71% of its student population compared to 16.92% at Seguin High School.
In addition, Sam Houston High School has 43.26% bilingual students, 7.66% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.00% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Seguin High School with 16.60% bilingual students, 10.81% gifted and talented students and 11.13% students in the special education program.
Sam Houston High School's 219 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10 years. Seguin High School's 116 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sam Houston High School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 61 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 45 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 67 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 17 beginning teachers. Seguin High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 26 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 32 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 31 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Sam Houston High School employs 118 female teachers and 100 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 24 special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 24 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Seguin High School employs 60 female teachers and 55 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 19 special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
