Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Rucker Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sutton Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rucker Elementary School has a regular student population of 371 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Sutton Elementary School has 1,008 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
Rucker Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 60 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sutton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Rucker Elementary School these are in Science and with 25% student progress while Sutton Elementary School secured in Mathematics and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Rucker Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.96%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
At Sutton Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.12% of student population, followed by Asians (11.31%), African Americans (8.93%), Whites or Caucasians (5.56%), Two or More Races (0.79%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, Rucker Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 95.96% compared to 94.84% at Sutton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rucker Elementary School has 187 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 50.40% of student population. Sutton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 745 or about 73.91% of student population.
In addition, Rucker Elementary School has 54.99% bilingual students, 3.23% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sutton Elementary School with 73.02% bilingual students, 6.25% gifted and talented students and 8.04% students in the special education program.
27 teachers employed at Rucker Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. The 57 teachers at Sutton Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Rucker Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Sutton Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Rucker Elementary School there are 23 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Sutton Elementary School there are 52 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
