Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Rucker Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Poe Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rucker Elementary School has a regular student population of 371 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Poe Elementary School has 784 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.2 students/teacher ratio.
Rucker Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 60 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Poe Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Rucker Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress. Poe Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Rucker Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.96%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
The student population at Poe Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 35.84%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.57%), Asians (11.35%), African Americans (9.69%) and Two or More Races (8.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Rucker Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 95.96% compared to 30.36% at Poe Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rucker Elementary School has 187 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 50.40% of student population. Poe Elementary School has more ELLs at 188 or about 23.98% of student population.
In addition, Rucker Elementary School has 54.99% bilingual students, 3.23% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Poe Elementary School with 23.60% bilingual students, 16.45% gifted and talented students and 4.97% students in the special education program.
27 teachers employed at Rucker Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. The 43 teachers at Poe Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Rucker Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Poe Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Rucker Elementary School there are 23 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. At Poe Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
