Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Alcott Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a regular student population of 1,062 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Alcott Elementary School has 202 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only five distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Alcott Elementary School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice. They make up for 45.86% of student population, followed by Hispanics (45.29%), Asians (3.95%), Whites or Caucasians (3.11%) and Two or More Races (1.69%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Alcott Elementary School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 61.39% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.14%), Two or More Races (1.98%) and Native Americans (0.50%). There is no Asians and Whites or Caucasians students in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 69.59% compared to 99.50% at Alcott Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.98% of its student population compared to 24.26% at Alcott Elementary School.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice’s bilingual students comprise 21.47%, gifted and talented students, 22.79%, while 8.57% are in the special education program. Alcott Elementary School bilingual students comprise 24.75%, gifted and talented students, 0.50%, and 10.40% are in the special education program.
