Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Rice Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Broadway Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rice Elementary School has a regular student population of 613 with a 15 students/teacher ratio while Broadway Elementary School has 1,273 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.4 students/teacher ratio.
Rice Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Broadway Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 98 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Rice Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Broadway Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Rice Elementary School. They make up for 45.84% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (35.24%), African Americans (13.87%), Asians (3.26%), Two or More Races (1.14%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
The student population at Broadway Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 50.35%, followed by Hispanics (23.25%), African Americans (11.47%), Asians (9.43%), Two or More Races (5.26%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
Based on household incomes, Rice Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 63.95% compared to 14.45% at Broadway Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rice Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 27.41% of its student population compared to 9.51% at Broadway Elementary School.
In addition, Rice Elementary School has 26.59% bilingual students, 2.45% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.81% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Broadway Elementary School with 8.80% bilingual students, 6.83% gifted and talented students and 9.74% students in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Rice Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. The 73 teachers at Broadway Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Rice Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Broadway Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 29 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Rice Elementary School there are 37 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
