Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Revere Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Burbank Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Revere Middle School’s regular student population is 1,109 with a 16 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Burbank Middle School is 1,423 students and a 18 students/teacher ratio.
Revere Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 58 in student achievement, 66 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 68 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Burbank Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 87 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Burbank Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Revere Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Revere Middle School. They make up for 55.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.65%), Whites or Caucasians (7.75%), Asians (3.79%), Two or More Races (1.08%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
At Burbank Middle School, Hispanics make up 94.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.29%), Whites or Caucasians (0.98%), Native Americans (0.21%) and Asians (0.07%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Revere Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 91.97% compared to 93.39% at Burbank Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Revere Middle School has 485 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 43.73% of student population. Burbank Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 643 or about 45.19% of student population.
In addition, Revere Middle School has 42.83% bilingual students, 8.21% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.74% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Burbank Middle School with 46.31% bilingual students, 29.66% gifted and talented students and 8.71% students in the special education program.
Revere Middle School's 69 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years. Teachers at Burbank Middle School, numbering 79 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Revere Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers. Burbank Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Revere Middle School there are 48 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Burbank Middle School there are 59 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
