Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Paul L Dunbar Learning Center, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Paul L Dunbar Learning Center has a regular student population of 497 with a 14.4 students/teacher ratio while Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School has 392 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Paul L Dunbar Learning Center's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and post-secondary. Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Paul L Dunbar Learning Center is African Americans who make up nearly 67.81% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.16%), Whites or Caucasians (2.21%), Two or More Races (2.21%), Native Americans (0.40%) and Asians (0.20%).
At Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School, Hispanics make up 90.56% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.10%), Whites or Caucasians (2.55%), Native Americans (1.02%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Paul L Dunbar Learning Center’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 96.58% compared to 92.35% at Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Paul L Dunbar Learning Center has 117 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.54% of student population. Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 259 or about 66.07% of student population.
Paul L Dunbar Learning Center’s bilingual students comprise 21.93%, gifted and talented students, 9.86%, while 10.46% are in the special education program. Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School bilingual students comprise 60.20%, gifted and talented students, 9.44%, and 14.80% are in the special education program.
