Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Paul L Dunbar Learning Center, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Arcadia Park Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Paul L Dunbar Learning Center has a regular student population of 497 with a 14.4 students/teacher ratio while Arcadia Park Elementary School has 606 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Paul L Dunbar Learning Center earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only three distinction designations or awards for performance. For Paul L Dunbar Learning Center these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and post-secondary while Arcadia Park Elementary School secured in Mathematics, Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Paul L Dunbar Learning Center is African Americans who make up nearly 67.81% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.16%), Whites or Caucasians (2.21%), Two or More Races (2.21%), Native Americans (0.40%) and Asians (0.20%).
At Arcadia Park Elementary School, Hispanics make up 90.10% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.59%), Whites or Caucasians (1.32%), Two or More Races (0.83%) and Native Americans (0.17%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Paul L Dunbar Learning Center’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 96.58% compared to 91.42% at Arcadia Park Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Paul L Dunbar Learning Center has 117 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.54% of student population. Arcadia Park Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 355 or about 58.58% of student population.
In addition, Paul L Dunbar Learning Center has 21.93% bilingual students, 9.86% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Arcadia Park Elementary School with 58.25% bilingual students, 17.99% gifted and talented students and 9.24% students in the special education program.
