Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Park View Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with De Zavala Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Park View Intermediate’s regular student population is 609 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at De Zavala Middle School is 558 students and a 10.5 students/teacher ratio.
Park View Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 73 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, De Zavala Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 57 in student achievement, 72 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 72 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Park View Intermediate's two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary. De Zavala Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Park View Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 85.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.02%), Whites or Caucasians (4.27%), Asians (0.16%) and Two or More Races (0.16%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At De Zavala Middle School, Hispanics make up 94.27% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (3.76%), African Americans (1.61%) and Two or More Races (0.36%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Park View Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 86.04% compared to 92.11% at De Zavala Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Park View Intermediate has 172 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.24% of student population. De Zavala Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 321 or about 57.53% of student population.
In addition, Park View Intermediate has 24.30% bilingual students, 4.93% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.94% are in the special education program. This stacks up against De Zavala Middle School with 52.69% bilingual students, 8.42% gifted and talented students and 13.44% students in the special education program.
Park View Intermediate's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.8 years. Teachers at De Zavala Middle School, numbering 53 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Park View Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. De Zavala Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Park View Intermediate there are 32 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 14 special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At De Zavala Middle School there are 40 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
