When we compared Palo Duro High School, which is a part of AMARILLO ISD, with Tascosa High School, which is a part of AMARILLO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Palo Duro High School’s regular student population is 1,895 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Tascosa High School is 2,185 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Palo Duro High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Tascosa High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Palo Duro High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary. Tascosa High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Palo Duro High School. They make up for 57.15% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.31%), Asians (11.13%), Whites or Caucasians (10.71%), Two or More Races (2.01%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
The student population at Tascosa High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 43.16%, followed by Hispanics (36.61%), African Americans (11.95%), Two or More Races (3.94%), Asians (3.71%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, Palo Duro High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 79.10% compared to 50.98% at Tascosa High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Palo Duro High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.06% of its student population compared to 4.85% at Tascosa High School.
In addition, Palo Duro High School has 23.01% bilingual students, 6.49% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.03% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Tascosa High School with 4.85% bilingual students, 9.29% gifted and talented students and 11.58% students in the special education program.
Palo Duro High School's 131 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10.1 years. Tascosa High School's 140 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Palo Duro High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 15 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 31 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 37 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 35 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. Tascosa High School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 39 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 36 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 29 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Palo Duro High School employs 66 female teachers and 64 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 18 special education teachers are being assisted by 26 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Tascosa High School employs 75 female teachers and 65 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 21 special education teachers are being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
