Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Palmer Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Oakland Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Palmer Elementary School has a regular student population of 678 with a 15.8 students/teacher ratio while Oakland Elementary School has 867 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.9 students/teacher ratio.
Palmer Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 85 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Oakland Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Oakland Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and post-secondary. Palmer Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Palmer Elementary School. They make up for 48.53% of student population, followed by Asians (19.03%), Hispanics (17.55%), Whites or Caucasians (8.70%), Two or More Races (5.46%) and Native Americans (0.59%).
The student population at Oakland Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 30.22%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.41%), Hispanics (22.61%), Asians (17.76%), Two or More Races (5.65%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, Palmer Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 46.02% compared to 41.06% at Oakland Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Palmer Elementary School has 101 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.90% of student population. Oakland Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 159 or about 18.34% of student population.
In addition, Palmer Elementary School has 14.60% bilingual students, 2.80% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.14% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Oakland Elementary School with 17.76% bilingual students, 2.88% gifted and talented students and 13.96% students in the special education program.
