Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Oak Ridge Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Armstrong Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Oak Ridge Elementary School has a regular student population of 673 with a 14.1 students/teacher ratio while Armstrong Elementary School has 605 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.4 students/teacher ratio.
Oak Ridge Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Armstrong Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Oak Ridge Elementary School this is in post-secondary while Armstrong Elementary School secured one for Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Oak Ridge Elementary School. They make up for 45.02% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.43%), African Americans (13.52%), Two or More Races (4.61%), Asians (2.23%) and Native Americans (0.74%).
At Armstrong Elementary School, Hispanics make up 71.74% of student population, followed by African Americans (12.89%), Whites or Caucasians (11.57%), Two or More Races (2.81%) and Native Americans (0.83%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Oak Ridge Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 65.08% compared to 94.38% at Armstrong Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Oak Ridge Elementary School has 206 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 30.61% of student population. Armstrong Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 332 or about 54.88% of student population.
Oak Ridge Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 30.31%, gifted and talented students, 1.93%, while 9.66% are in the special education program. Armstrong Elementary School bilingual students comprise 53.88%, gifted and talented students, 0.33%, and 10.91% are in the special education program.
47 teachers employed at Oak Ridge Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years. The 42 teachers at Armstrong Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Oak Ridge Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Armstrong Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Oak Ridge Elementary School there are 42 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
