Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Oak Forest Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Young Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Oak Forest Elementary School has a regular student population of 861 with a 17.6 students/teacher ratio while Young Elementary School has 366 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Oak Forest Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 96 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Oak Forest Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Young Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Oak Forest Elementary School. They make up for 57.61% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.64%), Asians (5.81%), Two or More Races (4.99%), African Americans (3.48%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
At Young Elementary School, African Americans make up 81.97% of student population, followed by Hispanics (15.57%), Whites or Caucasians (1.91%) and Two or More Races (0.55%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Oak Forest Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 16.84% compared to 96.17% at Young Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Oak Forest Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 2.56% of its student population compared to 2.73% at Young Elementary School.
Oak Forest Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.25%, gifted and talented students, 45.18%, while 5.69% are in the special education program. Young Elementary School bilingual students comprise 3.01%, gifted and talented students, 1.09%, and 8.47% are in the special education program.
49 teachers employed at Oak Forest Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years. The 22 teachers at Young Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Oak Forest Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Young Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, one teacher only has worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Oak Forest Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
