Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Neff Ecc, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Shearn Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Neff Ecc has a regular student population of 570 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Shearn Elementary School has 464 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.7 students/teacher ratio.
Neff Ecc earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89). It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education only.
On the other hand, Shearn Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 51 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 67 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Neff Ecc and Shearn Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Neff Ecc is Hispanics who make up nearly 86.84% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.54%), Asians (3.33%), Whites or Caucasians (1.93%), Native Americans (0.18%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
At Shearn Elementary School, Hispanics make up 72.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.41%), Asians (2.80%), Whites or Caucasians (1.94%) and Two or More Races (0.43%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Neff Ecc’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.79% compared to 97.84% at Shearn Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Neff Ecc has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 79.30% of its student population compared to 56.03% at Shearn Elementary School.
In addition, Neff Ecc has 79.30% bilingual students, 1.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 3.51% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Shearn Elementary School with 63.58% bilingual students, 1.51% gifted and talented students and 3.88% students in the special education program.
34 teachers employed at Neff Ecc have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 26 teachers at Shearn Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 3.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Neff Ecc no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Shearn Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Neff Ecc there are 32 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
