Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Neff Ecc, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sanchez Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Neff Ecc has a regular student population of 570 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Sanchez Elementary School has 501 students and a student-teacher ratio of 20 students/teacher ratio.
Neff Ecc earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89). It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education only.
On the other hand, Sanchez Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Sanchez Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress. Neff Ecc has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Neff Ecc is Hispanics who make up nearly 86.84% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.54%), Asians (3.33%), Whites or Caucasians (1.93%), Native Americans (0.18%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
At Sanchez Elementary School, Hispanics make up 96.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.79%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.80%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Neff Ecc’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.79% compared to 97.80% at Sanchez Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Neff Ecc has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 79.30% of its student population compared to 51.70% at Sanchez Elementary School.
In addition, Neff Ecc has 79.30% bilingual students, 1.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 3.51% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sanchez Elementary School with 50.30% bilingual students, 3.39% gifted and talented students and 11.38% students in the special education program.
34 teachers employed at Neff Ecc have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 25 teachers at Sanchez Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Neff Ecc no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Sanchez Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Neff Ecc there are 32 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
