Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Neff Ecc, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Ross Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Neff Ecc has a regular student population of 570 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Ross Elementary School has 305 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.4 students/teacher ratio.
Neff Ecc earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89). It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education only.
On the other hand, Ross Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Neff Ecc and Ross Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Neff Ecc is Hispanics who make up nearly 86.84% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.54%), Asians (3.33%), Whites or Caucasians (1.93%), Native Americans (0.18%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
The student population at Ross Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 50.49%, followed by Hispanics (47.54%), Two or More Races (0.98%), Whites or Caucasians (0.66%) and Asians (0.33%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Neff Ecc’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.79% compared to 96.39% at Ross Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Neff Ecc has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 79.30% of its student population compared to 30.16% at Ross Elementary School.
In addition, Neff Ecc has 79.30% bilingual students, 1.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 3.51% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Ross Elementary School with 25.57% bilingual students, 1.31% gifted and talented students and 11.15% students in the special education program.
34 teachers employed at Neff Ecc have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 19 teachers at Ross Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Neff Ecc no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Ross Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Neff Ecc there are 32 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
