Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Navarro Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Navarro Middle School’s regular student population is 593 with a 16.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Tanglewood Middle School is 868 students and a 17.8 students/teacher ratio.
Navarro Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 80 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Navarro Middle School and Tanglewood Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Navarro Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.76%), Whites or Caucasians (0.84%), Two or More Races (0.67%) and Asians (0.34%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Tanglewood Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 49.65%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, Navarro Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.12% compared to 58.41% at Tanglewood Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Navarro Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 53.63% of its student population compared to 23.85% at Tanglewood Middle School.
In addition, Navarro Middle School has 52.11% bilingual students, 10.46% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.35% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Tanglewood Middle School with 23.16% bilingual students, 20.05% gifted and talented students and 9.10% students in the special education program.
