When we compared Murchison Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Garcia Ymla, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Murchison Middle School’s regular student population is 1,213 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Garcia Ymla is 271 students and a 9.2 students/teacher ratio.
Murchison Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 87 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Garcia Ymla earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Murchison Middle School and Garcia Ymla are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Murchison Middle School. They make up for 58.20% of student population, followed by Hispanics (23.99%), Asians (7.25%), Two or More Races (6.02%), African Americans (4.37%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
At Garcia Ymla, Hispanics make up 73.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.40%), Two or More Races (1.48%), Whites or Caucasians (1.11%), Asians (1.11%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
Based on household incomes, the Murchison Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 23.17% compared to 94.10% at Garcia Ymla.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Murchison Middle School has 164 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.52% of student population. Garcia Ymla has more ELLs at 165 or about 60.89% of student population.
Murchison Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 13.77%, gifted and talented students, 20.28%, while 13.27% are in the special education program. Garcia Ymla bilingual students comprise 59.41%, gifted and talented students, 14.39%, and 26.20% are in the special education program.
Murchison Middle School's 73 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years. Teachers at Garcia Ymla, numbering 29 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Murchison Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
