When we compared Mount Carmel Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mount Carmel Academy’s regular student population is 268 with a student-teacher ratio of students/teacher ratio. The student population at Wheatley High School is 740 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Mount Carmel Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 85 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mount Carmel Academy's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Wheatley High School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Mount Carmel Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 87.31% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.46%), Whites or Caucasians (2.99%), Two or More Races (1.49%) and Asians (0.75%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Wheatley High School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, the Mount Carmel Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 81.72% compared to 95.41% at Wheatley High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mount Carmel Academy has 69 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.75% of student population. Wheatley High School has significantly more ELLs at 144 or about 19.46% of student population.
Mount Carmel Academy has no bilingual student, while 4.85% are in the special education program, and 11.94% are in the gifted and talented program students. Wheatley High School 18.65% are in the special education program, 6.76% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 15.81% students.
Mount Carmel Academy's zero teacher have been working at the campus for an average of years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly years. Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.3 years.
