Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Morris Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Southmore Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Morris Middle School’s regular student population is 714 with a 11.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Southmore Intermediate is 709 students and a 12.5 students/teacher ratio.
Morris Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Southmore Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Morris Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Southmore Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Morris Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 70.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.49%), Asians (6.16%), Whites or Caucasians (3.78%) and Two or More Races (0.70%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Southmore Intermediate, Hispanics make up 94.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (2.82%), African Americans (2.68%), Native Americans (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Morris Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 78.71% compared to 92.81% at Southmore Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Morris Middle School has 201 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.15% of student population. Southmore Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 286 or about 40.34% of student population.
In addition, Morris Middle School has 23.81% bilingual students, 5.18% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.55% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Southmore Intermediate with 36.53% bilingual students, 5.78% gifted and talented students and 10.44% students in the special education program.
Morris Middle School's 61 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years. Teachers at Southmore Intermediate, numbering 56 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Morris Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Southmore Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Morris Middle School there are 44 female teachers and 17 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Southmore Intermediate there are 29 female teachers and 27 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
