Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Missouri City Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Quail Valley Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Missouri City Middle School’s regular student population is 956 with a 13.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Quail Valley Middle School is 1,080 students and a 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Missouri City Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 70 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Quail Valley Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Missouri City Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Social Studies. Quail Valley Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Missouri City Middle School. They make up for 60.88% of student population, followed by Hispanics (34.52%), Two or More Races (1.99%), Whites or Caucasians (1.15%), Asians (1.05%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
The student population at Quail Valley Middle School is also predominantly by Asians at 35.09%, followed by African Americans (31.67%), Hispanics (18.15%), Whites or Caucasians (11.02%), Two or More Races (3.61%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
Based on household incomes, Missouri City Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 84.00% compared to 40.74% at Quail Valley Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Missouri City Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 16.84% of its student population compared to 5.19% at Quail Valley Middle School.
In addition, Missouri City Middle School has 16.63% bilingual students, 0.94% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.21% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Quail Valley Middle School with 4.44% bilingual students, 50.37% gifted and talented students and 9.26% students in the special education program.
Missouri City Middle School's 71 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years. Teachers at Quail Valley Middle School, numbering 59 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Missouri City Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Quail Valley Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Missouri City Middle School there are 48 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Quail Valley Middle School there are 39 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
