Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Mendenhall Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Bethany Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Mendenhall Elementary School has a regular student population of 578 with a 10.5 students/teacher ratio while Bethany Elementary School has 257 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.4 students/teacher ratio.
Mendenhall Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Mendenhall Elementary School and Bethany Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Mendenhall Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 71.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (12.28%), Whites or Caucasians (9.86%), Two or More Races (4.15%), Asians (2.25%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
The student population at Bethany Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.86%, followed by Asians (21.40%), Hispanics (12.06%), African Americans (10.12%), Two or More Races (7.78%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
Based on household incomes, Mendenhall Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 76.82% compared to 25.29% at Bethany Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mendenhall Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 59.17% of its student population compared to 20.62% at Bethany Elementary School.
In addition, Mendenhall Elementary School has 59.17% bilingual students, 3.98% are in the gifted and talented program, while 17.47% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Bethany Elementary School with 19.84% bilingual students, 10.51% gifted and talented students and 14.40% students in the special education program.
