Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Meadowbrook Middle School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Benbrook Middle/High School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Meadowbrook Middle School’s regular student population is 822 with a 16.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Benbrook Middle/High School is 1,530 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Meadowbrook Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 55 in student achievement, 60 in school progress and 61 in closing performance gaps. It scored 60 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Benbrook Middle/High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 86 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Benbrook Middle/High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and Social Studies. Meadowbrook Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Meadowbrook Middle School. They make up for 55.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.62%), Whites or Caucasians (4.74%), Two or More Races (2.19%), Asians (0.61%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
The student population at Benbrook Middle/High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 49.67%, followed by Hispanics (38.24%), African Americans (7.12%), Two or More Races (3.20%), Asians (1.31%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
Based on household incomes, Meadowbrook Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 94.28% compared to 51.70% at Benbrook Middle/High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Meadowbrook Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 40.02% of its student population compared to 11.05% at Benbrook Middle/High School.
In addition, Meadowbrook Middle School has 38.44% bilingual students, 13.75% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.71% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Benbrook Middle/High School with 10.85% bilingual students, 17.39% gifted and talented students and 10.26% students in the special education program.
Meadowbrook Middle School's 48 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.3 years. Teachers at Benbrook Middle/High School, numbering 96 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Meadowbrook Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Benbrook Middle/High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
Meadowbrook Middle School has two special education teachers assisted by 2 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Benbrook Middle/High School has nine special education teachers and 6 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
