Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Meadow Village Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Burke Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Meadow Village Elementary School has a regular student population of 409 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while Burke Elementary School has 545 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Meadow Village Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Burke Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 95 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Meadow Village Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Burke Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Meadow Village Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 84.11% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (8.07%), African Americans (6.11%), Two or More Races (1.47%) and Native Americans (0.24%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Burke Elementary School, Hispanics make up 85.50% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (10.83%), African Americans (2.39%), Two or More Races (0.73%) and Asians (0.55%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Meadow Village Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 87.04% compared to 73.76% at Burke Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Meadow Village Elementary School has 22 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.38% of student population. Burke Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 125 or about 22.94% of student population.
In addition, Meadow Village Elementary School has 0.24% bilingual students, 1.71% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.09% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Burke Elementary School with 33.39% bilingual students, 3.85% gifted and talented students and 17.25% students in the special education program.
