Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared McGowen Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Janowski Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
McGowen Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Janowski Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at McGowen Elementary School. They make up for 60.35% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.64%), Whites or Caucasians (0.51%) and Two or More Races (0.51%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Janowski Elementary School, Hispanics make up 95.48% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.10%), Whites or Caucasians (0.95%), Asians (0.24%) and Two or More Races (0.24%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, McGowen Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 99.24% compared to 96.67% at Janowski Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, McGowen Elementary School has 86 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.72% of student population. Janowski Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 285 or about 67.86% of student population.
In addition, McGowen Elementary School has 20.45% bilingual students, 5.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.58% are in the special education program.
