Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared McElwain Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Keiko Davidson Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
McElwain Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,094 with a 16.9 students/teacher ratio while Keiko Davidson Elementary School has 1,066 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.1 students/teacher ratio.
McElwain Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Keiko Davidson Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 94 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 96 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Keiko Davidson Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. McElwain Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at McElwain Elementary School. They make up for 44.79% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.49%), Whites or Caucasians (17.18%), Asians (9.60%), Two or More Races (5.76%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Keiko Davidson Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 40.81%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.95%), Hispanics (15.38%), African Americans (9.10%), Two or More Races (6.10%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, McElwain Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 42.14% compared to 14.92% at Keiko Davidson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, McElwain Elementary School has 239 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.85% of student population. Keiko Davidson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 292 or about 27.39% of student population.
In addition, McElwain Elementary School has 21.02% bilingual students, 1.83% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Keiko Davidson Elementary School with 25.70% bilingual students, 8.35% gifted and talented students and 12.66% students in the special education program.
