Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Mahaffey Elementary School, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Brill Elementary School, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Mahaffey Elementary School has a regular student population of 880 with a 13.8 students/teacher ratio while Brill Elementary School has 837 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.3 students/teacher ratio.
Mahaffey Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Brill Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Mahaffey Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Brill Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Mahaffey Elementary School. They make up for 48.52% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.98%), African Americans (10.00%), Two or More Races (3.75%), Asians (3.30%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
The student population at Brill Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 41.82%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.51%), African Americans (16.61%), Two or More Races (6.09%), Asians (5.73%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
Based on household incomes, the Mahaffey Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 44.43% compared to 46.24% at Brill Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mahaffey Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 27.27% of its student population compared to 25.09% at Brill Elementary School.
In addition, Mahaffey Elementary School has 27.50% bilingual students, 4.89% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.27% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Brill Elementary School with 34.17% bilingual students, 5.14% gifted and talented students and 11.11% students in the special education program.
