As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Macarthur High School, which is a part of NORTH EAST ISD, with International School Of America, which is a part of NORTH EAST ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Macarthur High School’s regular student population is 2,112 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at International School Of America is 468 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.5 students/teacher ratio.
Macarthur High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 84 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, International School Of America performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only five distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Macarthur High School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while International School Of America secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Macarthur High School. They make up for 64.96% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.31%), African Americans (9.42%), Two or More Races (3.08%), Asians (1.89%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
At International School Of America, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.56% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.84%), Asians (5.13%), Two or More Races (3.63%), African Americans (3.42%) and Native Americans (0.21%).
Based on household incomes, Macarthur High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 59.94% compared to 27.78% at International School Of America.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Macarthur High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.87% of its student population compared to 4.27% at International School Of America.
In addition, Macarthur High School has 18.94% bilingual students, 6.96% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.07% are in the special education program. This stacks up against International School Of America with 3.85% bilingual students, 18.80% gifted and talented students and 2.35% students in the special education program.
Macarthur High School's 143 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10.6 years. International School Of America's 44 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 9.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Macarthur High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 58 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 32 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 31 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. International School Of America has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Macarthur High School employs 83 female teachers and 59 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 18 special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 17 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, International School Of America employs 27 female teachers and 16 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is in special education without any assistance. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
