Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Lake Olympia Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with James Bowie Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Lake Olympia Middle School’s regular student population is 1,200 with a 14.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at James Bowie Middle School is 1,534 students and a 17.7 students/teacher ratio.
Lake Olympia Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 74 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, James Bowie Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 90 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 97 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
James Bowie Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Lake Olympia Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Lake Olympia Middle School. They make up for 55.42% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.25%), Asians (4.83%), Two or More Races (3.17%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
The student population at James Bowie Middle School is also predominantly by African Americans at 28.49%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.21%), Hispanics (22.16%), Asians (18.77%), Two or More Races (3.59%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
Based on household incomes, Lake Olympia Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 69.50% compared to 40.03% at James Bowie Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lake Olympia Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 19.00% of its student population compared to 8.93% at James Bowie Middle School.
In addition, Lake Olympia Middle School has 18.25% bilingual students, 0.42% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.67% are in the special education program. This stacks up against James Bowie Middle School with 8.67% bilingual students, 3.26% gifted and talented students and 14.15% students in the special education program.
Lake Olympia Middle School's 82 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years. Teachers at James Bowie Middle School, numbering 86 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lake Olympia Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 26 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. James Bowie Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Lake Olympia Middle School there are 53 female teachers and 29 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 21 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At James Bowie Middle School there are 62 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
