Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Knox Junior High School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Wilkerson Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Knox Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,378 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Wilkerson Intermediate is 790 students and a 15.9 students/teacher ratio.
Knox Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wilkerson Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wilkerson Intermediate's one out of seven distinction is in post-secondary. Knox Junior High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Knox Junior High School. They make up for 50.44% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.37%), African Americans (9.29%), Asians (6.53%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
The student population at Wilkerson Intermediate is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 39.24%, followed by Hispanics (37.09%), African Americans (14.05%), Asians (4.30%), Two or More Races (4.30%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
Based on household incomes, the Knox Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 28.23% compared to 49.37% at Wilkerson Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Knox Junior High School has 135 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.80% of student population. Wilkerson Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 158 or about 20.00% of student population.
Knox Junior High School’s bilingual students comprise 9.72%, gifted and talented students, 15.46%, while 7.26% are in the special education program. Wilkerson Intermediate bilingual students comprise 19.24%, gifted and talented students, 11.27%, and 11.90% are in the special education program.
Knox Junior High School's 76 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. Teachers at Wilkerson Intermediate, numbering 49 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Knox Junior High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Wilkerson Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Knox Junior High School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Wilkerson Intermediate there are 41 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
