Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Klein Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Strack Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Klein Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,040 with a 12.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Strack Intermediate is 1,216 students and a 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Klein Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Strack Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. This is in Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Klein Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.75% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.46%), Asians (4.23%), Whites or Caucasians (2.21%), Native Americans (0.67%) and Two or More Races (0.67%).
The student population at Strack Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 37.75%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (30.18%), African Americans (18.26%), Asians (8.96%), Two or More Races (4.52%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, Klein Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 89.81% compared to 45.31% at Strack Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Klein Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 39.90% of its student population compared to 11.35% at Strack Intermediate.
In addition, Klein Intermediate has 39.42% bilingual students, 2.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.96% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Strack Intermediate with 11.27% bilingual students, 9.70% gifted and talented students and 11.76% students in the special education program.
Klein Intermediate's 83 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years. Teachers at Strack Intermediate, numbering 78 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Klein Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers. Strack Intermediate has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Klein Intermediate there are 56 female teachers and 27 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has eight staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
At Strack Intermediate there are 59 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
