Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Kennedy Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Liestman Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Kennedy Elementary School has a regular student population of 643 with a 11.4 students/teacher ratio while Liestman Elementary School has 702 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Kennedy Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Liestman Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Kennedy Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Liestman Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Kennedy Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 77.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.88%), Whites or Caucasians (2.18%), Asians (1.56%) and Native Americans (0.78%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
At Liestman Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 56.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.93%), Asians (15.95%), Whites or Caucasians (2.14%) and Native Americans (0.28%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Kennedy Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 90.67% compared to 85.61% at Liestman Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Kennedy Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 69.83% of its student population compared to 63.68% at Liestman Elementary School.
In addition, Kennedy Elementary School has 69.67% bilingual students, 0.93% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.15% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Liestman Elementary School with 69.09% bilingual students, 1.57% gifted and talented students and 11.68% students in the special education program.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Kennedy Elementary School there are 48 female teachers and eight male teachers.
