Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Katy Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with West Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Katy Elementary School has a regular student population of 657 with a 13.3 students/teacher ratio while West Memorial Elementary School has 821 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Katy Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, West Memorial Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Katy Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and 25% closing performance gaps. West Memorial Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Katy Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 66.82% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.92%), African Americans (5.94%), Two or More Races (2.89%), Asians (1.52%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
The student population at West Memorial Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 39.10%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.09%), African Americans (23.02%), Two or More Races (7.06%) and Asians (5.72%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Katy Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.61% compared to 66.26% at West Memorial Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Katy Elementary School has 32 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.87% of student population. West Memorial Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 199 or about 24.24% of student population.
Katy Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 4.72%, gifted and talented students, 5.63%, while 23.44% are in the special education program. West Memorial Elementary School bilingual students comprise 24.12%, gifted and talented students, 1.95%, and 15.59% are in the special education program.
49 teachers employed at Katy Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years. The 63 teachers at West Memorial Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Katy Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including minus two beginning teacher.
