Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Katy Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Katy Elementary School has a regular student population of 657 with a 13.3 students/teacher ratio while Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School has 1,065 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.
Katy Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Katy Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and 25% closing performance gaps. Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Katy Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 66.82% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.92%), African Americans (5.94%), Two or More Races (2.89%), Asians (1.52%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
The student population at Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 34.27%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (30.23%), Asians (19.15%), African Americans (10.23%), Two or More Races (5.82%) and Native Americans (0.28%).
Based on household incomes, the Katy Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.61% compared to 41.69% at Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Katy Elementary School has 32 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.87% of student population. Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 423 or about 39.72% of student population.
Katy Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 4.72%, gifted and talented students, 5.63%, while 23.44% are in the special education program. Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School bilingual students comprise 39.53%, gifted and talented students, 3.19%, and 14.84% are in the special education program.
