Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Kahla Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Salyards Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Kahla Middle School’s regular student population is 1,301 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Salyards Middle School is 1,489 students and a 17.9 students/teacher ratio.
Kahla Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Salyards Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Kahla Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Salyards Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Kahla Middle School. They make up for 56.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.06%), Asians (7.99%), Whites or Caucasians (6.69%), Two or More Races (2.31%) and Native Americans (1.38%).
At Salyards Middle School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 54.67% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.57%), African Americans (10.07%), Asians (6.92%), Two or More Races (4.84%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
Based on household incomes, Kahla Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 78.63% compared to 19.81% at Salyards Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Kahla Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 18.52% of its student population compared to 3.49% at Salyards Middle School.
In addition, Kahla Middle School has 17.06% bilingual students, 4.07% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.61% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Salyards Middle School with 3.16% bilingual students, 15.25% gifted and talented students and 9.74% students in the special education program.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Kahla Middle School there are 65 female teachers and 26 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 16 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
At Salyards Middle School there are 63 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
