Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Jefferson Middle School, which is a part of PORT ARTHUR ISD, with Lincoln Middle School, which is a part of PORT ARTHUR ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Jefferson Middle School’s regular student population is 879 with a 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Lincoln Middle School is 722 students and a 17.2 students/teacher ratio.
Jefferson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 80 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lincoln Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 53 in student achievement, 58 in school progress, 62 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Jefferson Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Lincoln Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Jefferson Middle School. They make up for 58.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (34.13%), Asians (3.98%), Native Americans (1.82%), Whites or Caucasians (1.48%) and Two or More Races (0.34%).
At Lincoln Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 60.53% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.10%), Whites or Caucasians (3.74%), Two or More Races (1.25%), Asians (0.83%) and Native Americans (0.42%).
Based on household incomes, Jefferson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 92.72% compared to 79.09% at Lincoln Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jefferson Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 32.08% of its student population compared to 15.51% at Lincoln Middle School.
In addition, Jefferson Middle School has 28.10% bilingual students, 5.46% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.81% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Lincoln Middle School with 13.57% bilingual students, 5.96% gifted and talented students and 13.02% students in the special education program.
Jefferson Middle School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.9 years. Teachers at Lincoln Middle School, numbering 42 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 5.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Jefferson Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers. Lincoln Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Jefferson Middle School there are 40 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Lincoln Middle School there are 32 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
