Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared James Bowie Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Dulles Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
James Bowie Middle School’s regular student population is 1,534 with a 17.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Dulles Middle School is 1,360 students and a 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
James Bowie Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 97 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Dulles Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 84 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 83 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For James Bowie Middle School these are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Dulles Middle School secured in Science and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at James Bowie Middle School. They make up for 28.49% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.21%), Hispanics (22.16%), Asians (18.77%), Two or More Races (3.59%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
The student population at Dulles Middle School is also predominantly by African Americans at 28.60%, followed by Asians (27.50%), Hispanics (22.65%), Whites or Caucasians (16.47%), Two or More Races (4.19%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
Based on household incomes, the James Bowie Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 40.03% compared to 53.24% at Dulles Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, James Bowie Middle School has 137 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.93% of student population. Dulles Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 200 or about 14.71% of student population.
James Bowie Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 8.67%, gifted and talented students, 3.26%, while 14.15% are in the special education program. Dulles Middle School bilingual students comprise 14.12%, gifted and talented students, 2.65%, and 11.99% are in the special education program.
James Bowie Middle School's 86 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.5 years. Teachers at Dulles Middle School, numbering 77 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, James Bowie Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Dulles Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At James Bowie Middle School there are 62 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Dulles Middle School there are 59 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
