Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Isaacs Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Crespo Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Isaacs Elementary School has a regular student population of 275 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while Crespo Elementary School has 580 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio.
Isaacs Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 52 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Crespo Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 83 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Mathematics, Isaacs Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Crespo Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Isaacs Elementary School. They make up for 56.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.73%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.55%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
At Crespo Elementary School, Hispanics make up 95.69% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.59%), Asians (1.03%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.69%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, Isaacs Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 97.09% compared to 93.97% at Crespo Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Isaacs Elementary School has 107 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 38.91% of student population. Crespo Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 439 or about 75.69% of student population.
In addition, Isaacs Elementary School has 37.82% bilingual students, 1.82% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.27% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Crespo Elementary School with 73.62% bilingual students, 11.38% gifted and talented students and 7.07% students in the special education program.
19 teachers employed at Isaacs Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. The 38 teachers at Crespo Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 13.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.8 years.
