Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Hughey Elementary School, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, with Barron Elementary School, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hughey Elementary School has a regular student population of 569 with a 15.3 students/teacher ratio while Barron Elementary School has 371 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.1 students/teacher ratio.
Hughey Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Hughey Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Barron Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hughey Elementary School. They make up for 57.82% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.44%), African Americans (10.19%), Two or More Races (6.85%), Asians (1.93%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
At Barron Elementary School, Hispanics make up 83.29% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (7.28%), African Americans (6.20%), Two or More Races (2.70%) and Asians (0.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Hughey Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 79.09% compared to 84.91% at Barron Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hughey Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.66% of its student population compared to 26.42% at Barron Elementary School.
In addition, Hughey Elementary School has 27.94% bilingual students, 1.76% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.25% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Barron Elementary School with 53.37% bilingual students, 8.36% gifted and talented students and 9.97% students in the special education program.
