Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Horn Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Burrus Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Horn Elementary School has a regular student population of 752 with a 17.6 students/teacher ratio while Burrus Elementary School has 275 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.4 students/teacher ratio.
Horn Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Horn Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Burrus Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Horn Elementary School. They make up for 38.03% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.78%), Hispanics (17.69%), Two or More Races (6.91%), African Americans (5.45%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
At Burrus Elementary School, African Americans make up 68.73% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.36%), Two or More Races (1.82%) and Whites or Caucasians (1.09%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Horn Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 17.82% compared to 96.00% at Burrus Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Horn Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 18.62% of its student population compared to 8.00% at Burrus Elementary School.
Horn Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 17.55%, gifted and talented students, 38.03%, while 7.31% are in the special education program. Burrus Elementary School bilingual students comprise 8.00%, gifted and talented students, 8.73%, and 6.18% are in the special education program.

The 19 teachers at Burrus Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years.
