Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Hofius Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Wunderlich Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Hofius Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,212 with a 16.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Wunderlich Intermediate is 1,364 students and a 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Hofius Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wunderlich Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Hofius Intermediate's one out of seven distinction is in Social Studies. Wunderlich Intermediate did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Hofius Intermediate. They make up for 42.82% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.83%), African Americans (10.64%), Asians (7.43%), Two or More Races (5.03%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
At Wunderlich Intermediate, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.51%), Asians (7.18%), Whites or Caucasians (3.67%), Two or More Races (2.79%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
Based on household incomes, the Hofius Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 31.85% compared to 76.98% at Wunderlich Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hofius Intermediate has 134 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.06% of student population. Wunderlich Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 415 or about 30.43% of student population.
Hofius Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 10.64%, gifted and talented students, 10.40%, while 9.57% are in the special education program. Wunderlich Intermediate bilingual students comprise 29.62%, gifted and talented students, 4.47%, and 12.83% are in the special education program.
Hofius Intermediate's 72 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. Teachers at Wunderlich Intermediate, numbering 104 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Hofius Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Wunderlich Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Hofius Intermediate there are 60 female teachers and 12 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Wunderlich Intermediate there are 79 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has six staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
