Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Hodges Bend Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Fort Settlement Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Hodges Bend Middle School’s regular student population is 919 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Fort Settlement Middle School is 1,385 students and a 19.1 students/teacher ratio.
Hodges Bend Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Fort Settlement Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 96 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Fort Settlement Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Hodges Bend Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hodges Bend Middle School. They make up for 48.86% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.77%), Asians (10.88%), Whites or Caucasians (5.01%), Two or More Races (2.94%) and Native Americans (0.44%).
At Fort Settlement Middle School, Asians are the biggest group, comprising 62.53% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.91%), Hispanics (7.94%), African Americans (6.86%), Two or More Races (4.12%) and Native Americans (0.65%).
Based on household incomes, Hodges Bend Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 77.80% compared to 13.50% at Fort Settlement Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hodges Bend Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 30.14% of its student population compared to 8.23% at Fort Settlement Middle School.
In addition, Hodges Bend Middle School has 29.71% bilingual students, 1.63% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.15% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Fort Settlement Middle School with 7.58% bilingual students, 19.93% gifted and talented students and 7.15% students in the special education program.
Hodges Bend Middle School's 67 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. Fort Settlement Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Hodges Bend Middle School there are 52 female teachers and 15 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
