Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Hobby Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with River Oaks Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hobby Elementary School has a regular student population of 569 with a 17.4 students/teacher ratio while River Oaks Elementary School has 599 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio.
Hobby Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, River Oaks Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 98 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
River Oaks Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Hobby Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hobby Elementary School. They make up for 61.86% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.03%), Two or More Races (0.88%), Whites or Caucasians (0.70%) and Asians (0.18%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at River Oaks Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 36.39%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.72%), Hispanics (17.20%), Two or More Races (7.51%), African Americans (4.84%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, Hobby Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 88.93% compared to 13.86% at River Oaks Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hobby Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 47.98% of its student population compared to 10.18% at River Oaks Elementary School.
Additionally, Hobby Elementary School has 52.55% bilingual students, 3.16% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.91% are in the special education program. River Oaks Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 10.52% of student population while 4.84% are in the special education program. River Oaks Elementary School bested Hobby Elementary School in one area, with nearly 62.44% of its student population in the gifted and talented program.
32 teachers employed at Hobby Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years. The 35 teachers at River Oaks Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.5 years.
