Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Highlands Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with James Patterson Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Highlands Elementary School has a regular student population of 562 with a 13.2 students/teacher ratio while James Patterson Elementary School has 754 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.5 students/teacher ratio.
Highlands Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 87 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Highlands Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary. James Patterson Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Highlands Elementary School. They make up for 30.96% of student population, followed by Asians (27.22%), Hispanics (21.89%), African Americans (12.99%) and Two or More Races (6.94%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at James Patterson Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 47.08%, followed by Hispanics (24.01%), Asians (21.22%), Whites or Caucasians (4.64%), Two or More Races (2.65%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Highlands Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 36.30% compared to 60.88% at James Patterson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Highlands Elementary School has 118 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.00% of student population. James Patterson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 214 or about 28.38% of student population.
Highlands Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 20.46%, gifted and talented students, 3.74%, while 15.48% are in the special education program. James Patterson Elementary School bilingual students comprise 27.72%, gifted and talented students, 1.06%, and 12.07% are in the special education program.
