Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Herrera Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sutton Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Herrera Elementary School has a regular student population of 811 with a 15.9 students/teacher ratio while Sutton Elementary School has 1,008 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
Herrera Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sutton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Mathematics, Herrera Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Sutton Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Herrera Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 96.55% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (1.97%) and African Americans (1.48%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
At Sutton Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.12% of student population, followed by Asians (11.31%), African Americans (8.93%), Whites or Caucasians (5.56%), Two or More Races (0.79%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, Herrera Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 99.63% compared to 94.84% at Sutton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Herrera Elementary School has 372 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.87% of student population. Sutton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 745 or about 73.91% of student population.
Herrera Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.21%, gifted and talented students, 8.51%, while 8.14% are in the special education program. Sutton Elementary School bilingual students comprise 73.02%, gifted and talented students, 6.25%, and 8.04% are in the special education program.
51 teachers employed at Herrera Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years. The 57 teachers at Sutton Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Herrera Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Sutton Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Herrera Elementary School there are 41 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
