Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Herod Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Poe Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Herod Elementary School has a regular student population of 766 with a 17 students/teacher ratio while Poe Elementary School has 784 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.2 students/teacher ratio.
Herod Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Poe Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Herod Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in Science. Poe Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Herod Elementary School. They make up for 36.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (30.42%), Whites or Caucasians (21.28%), Asians (7.31%), Two or More Races (4.05%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
The student population at Poe Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 35.84%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.57%), Asians (11.35%), African Americans (9.69%) and Two or More Races (8.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Herod Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 54.83% compared to 30.36% at Poe Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Herod Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 24.67% of its student population compared to 23.98% at Poe Elementary School.
Herod Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 31.46%, gifted and talented students, 30.29%, while 6.27% are in the special education program. Poe Elementary School bilingual students comprise 23.60%, gifted and talented students, 16.45%, and 4.97% are in the special education program.

The 43 teachers at Poe Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.2 years.
