Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Heritage Elementary School, which is a part of LA PORTE ISD, with Jennie Reid Elementary School, which is a part of LA PORTE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Heritage Elementary School has a regular student population of 516 with a 15.6 students/teacher ratio while Jennie Reid Elementary School has 385 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Heritage Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 89 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Heritage Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Jennie Reid Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Heritage Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 68.02% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.55%), Two or More Races (2.33%), African Americans (1.55%), Asians (0.58%) and Native Americans (0.19%).
The student population at Jennie Reid Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.19%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (43.64%), Two or More Races (5.71%), African Americans (4.94%) and Asians (0.52%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Heritage Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 57.17% compared to 53.77% at Jennie Reid Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Heritage Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 34.50% of its student population compared to 3.12% at Jennie Reid Elementary School.
In addition, Heritage Elementary School has 35.27% bilingual students, 6.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.98% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Jennie Reid Elementary School with 2.60% bilingual students, 8.31% gifted and talented students and 11.69% students in the special education program.
33 teachers employed at Heritage Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.9 years. The 26 teachers at Jennie Reid Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
